Take a sample batch. Measure the weight of the raw materials you put in vs. the weight of the finished goods that came out.
Example (Candle Making):
- Input: 1000g Wax + 100g Oil = 1100g Total
- Output: 5 Candles weighing 200g each = 1000g Total
- Yield: 1000 / 1100 = 90.9%
Step 2: Apply the Multiplier to your Cost.
If your yield is 90.9%, your waste is roughly 9%. To find your real cost, you don’t multiply your material cost by 1.09; you divide it by your yield.
Real Cost = (Raw Material Cost) / 0.909
This accounts for the fact that you have to buy 110% of the material to get 100% of the product.
